Garrett Jacobs enters Federal Duck Stamp competition

Burlington City New Jersey has its own special place in American history. Burlington New Jersey has also been the home to some very well known people that have accomplished some very well notable achievements too. While the list of these Burlingtonians may be a little longer than one may think, you can access a short list that I found on  Wikipedia by clicking here. Hopefully on September 10, 2016 Garrett Jacobs who was born and raised in Burlington City will achieve something that has never been done. In the  61-year history of the Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp that's (aka Federal Duck Stamp) competition, there has never been an African-American from an urban area to win the Federal Duck Stamp competition.

Garret Jacobs won the North Carolina Waterfowl Conservation Stamp competition this past January 2016. That by itself was remarkable for a few key reasons. Here is a snippet of the published article by Mike Voss (author) of The Washington Daily News: "AND THE WINNER IS: Garrett Jacobs’ painting of a brant is the winner of the North Carolina Waterfowl Conservation Stamp competition. Jacobs won the North Carolina competition in his second attempt. He scored 41 points out of a possible 45 points. He’s placed in the top 20 entries in three federal duck-stamp competitions.

Neal Woolard, one of the five judges and a Beaufort County resident, was impressed with the quality of the entries. “I think it (quality) was really good in the top five that we picked. We probably cut out more in the in-and-out round to start off with than we have in years past,” Woolard said. “It goes back to the fact we’re attracting so many more artists now, and it kind of thins out things toward the bottom because the quality if getting better at the top, if that makes sense.” Woolard noted that recent winners of the annual competition “are spread out in more states than they used to be.” “Incidentally, the last two winners here were artists of the year for Ducks Unlimited in 2014, 2015. So, that gives you an idea of the quality of folks we are attracting right here in Washington,” Woolard said.

Jacobs’ blue-ribbon entry will be used as the artwork for the 2016 prints and ducks stamps sold to help pay for North Carolina’s portion of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan." Another remarkable thing is that from what I've been finding out is that he may also be the first African-American from an urban area to win any state sponsored Duck Stamp competition. In just about 3 more days some of the most talented wildlife artists throughout this country will enter their masterpiece artwork for an opportunity to have it featured on a conservation stamp. This stamp projects to raise almost $25 million a year to support wetland conservation. What a contribution this could be and knowing that it came at the hands of a urban African-American artist from Burlington City in his own urban backyard of Philadelphia makes it all even sweeter. Here's another snippet of info that I found on the website of where the competition is being held – " Each year, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service sponsors the Federal Duck Stamp Art contest, the only federally sponsored competition of its kind. This year, the Service is partnering with the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University to bring the contest to Philadelphia. Art entries will be displayed and judging will take place at the Academy on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9 and 10. There are people from the Federal Duck Stamp national circuit trail that is aware of who Mr. Garrett Jacobs is and the excitement that he's bringing from the urban area where he is from. If you want to wish him luck then show your support by showing up. Garrett Jacobs is coming back home for a few days from Florida and he would be very grateful to see as many people as he can.  What would really be nice if the mayor or someone from his staff be there. What a remarkable photo that would be. Many fist timers all together making another Burlington City imprint in lives of so many throughout our country.

What if you could have Superman-like vision

Ok, well Superman vision may be a bit of a stretch, after all, he isn’t from this planet, so we can’t really compare his super-alien vision to our mediocre human vision; now can we? However, what we can do is improve our own visual acuity. Why settle for standard 20/20 vision, when you can have, 20/15 vision? Plus, you want to ensure that your vision remains healthy as you age. On the flip side, if you suffer from poor vision, improving your ocular health should be a priority. After all, healthy vision is your gateway to all the wonderful sights in this world.

Unfortunately, one of the problems we currently face is that most individuals do not consume a diet rich in nutrients (colorful fruits and vegetables) needed to support healthy eye sight. In order to support healthy vision and prevent any vision deficiencies, supplementing your diet with carotenoids and other eye health-benefiting nutrients is vital. Much research has been done over the years on what nutrients are essential for supporting healthy vision. Antioxidant-rich nutrients such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Zinc, Selenium and Bilberry Extract are known for the benefits they provide to ocular health. A recent study conducted by researchers in Ireland, looked at what long-term supplementation with carotenoids did to those who already had normal (20/20) vision. It followed 105 subjects, male and female, with an average age of about 48 who had normal vision but lower than normal macular pigment. For a year, half took a placebo while the other half took a capsule containing 10mg of lutein, 10mg of meso-zeaxanthin and 2 mg of zeaxanthin. The results showed significant improvement in overall macular pigment and visual performance; where all subjects not only improved visual acuity, but also improved performance against different lighting conditions, and how well subjects are able to distinguish edges of objects. The results would signify improving the quality of life for the average person.1

Anti-nutrients Consumed by Nearly Every American

For a majority of my life, I ate grain-based foods at almost every meal. Breakfast usually included toast, cereal, pastries or a burrito. Then, lunch came around and I’d have whatever food the school cafeteria was serving; a sandwich, burger, pizza or pasta dish. At home for dinner, my mom would make very traditional Mexican meals; which almost always included tortillas or bread. Let’s not take into account the snacks I’d eat; any Little Debbie™ product I could get my hands on. This was normal to me; as it still is now for many American adults and children. What isn’t normal, however, is obesity, autoimmune diseases, skin problems, joint and muscle aches, digestive problems and several other diseases triggered as a result of the anti-nutrients delivered from grain-based products.

An anti-nutrient is a substance, present in grains and legumes, that compromise one’s health. While a nutrient, on the other hand, is a substance that nourishes growth and the maintenance of life. There are four major anti-nutrients found in grains: Lectins, Gluten, Phytates and Saponins. Although Lectins, Phytates and Saponins provide some nutritional benefits when present in moderation, excessive amounts of these in the blood stream are damaging. Certain forms of Lectin suppress immune function, interfere with normal protective gut barriers and promote systematic inflammation. When Phytates are consumed in excess, they bind to essential minerals in the digestive tract, making them difficult to absorb; leading to nutrient deficiencies and other health problems. Saponins, found in legumes, while deemed less harmful, are still capable of infiltrating cell membranes; compromising function, especially towards the immune system.

Gluten is a term we are all very familiar with. It’s the most common anti-nutrient; which is believed to affect millions around the globe. Although some individuals still do not believe they are gluten intolerant, some side effects of gluten consumption include bloating, constipation, gas, acid reflux, IBS (and other bowl problems), allergies, migraines, and skin & joint conditions.
